Sony NEX-7 Digital Camera – Video Review

April 25, 2012

The Sony NEX-7 Digital Camera is a great addition the wide array of high quality compacts in the Camera market today. Because of its powerful features all packed in a very svelte design, its suited for enthusiasts looking for a reliable compact that takes photos that will definitely turn heads. Beginners will also find this piece of equipment a very worthy investment and they could start exploring the world of photography with features such as Easy and Intelligent Auto. For the professional shutterbug though, there is enough in here to keep their photography palette satisfied.

There has been a lot of suspense about this camera and wether it is even possible to live up to the hype that has been spread like wildfire online. Of course on paper it looks amazing. The build, the design, the features, the video capability, the new sensor, the built in OLED EVF (which is super duper uber FANTASTIC), and the tri-navi controls are everything the enthusiast market has ever wanted in a small take anywhere camera. Hell, I suspect the NEX-7 may even create more of us crazy gear heads because even when Uncle Joe sees this camera he is going to want one.

It has a way of making people wonder what the hell you are shooting with, and when they learn about it they seem to want to own one for themselves. This has happened to me three times while out and about shooting with the NEX-7. BUT the real question for me while shooting was to determine if it did indeed live up to the hype and was worth shelling out $1200 for the body alone, which to be fair is $6800 less than a Leica M9-P and you can still mount your favorite Leica, Zeiss ZM and Voigtlander M mount glass on to! Hell, you can mount just about any glass to this NEX-7, which makes it pretty damn special right there.

Eliezer Sobel: Are You a “Real” Writer?

November 13, 2011

Writers learn early on that there are actually many people out there, incomprehensible as it may seem, who simply do not enjoy reading our work. (We probably wouldn’t be very close friends with these Neanderthals, if we met them.) We try not to take it personally, but most of us do. Some random, sub-human casually mentions in passing that, in their grossly distorted and useless opinion, our written expressions fall short of Tolstoy’s, and instantly both our writings and our entire lives seem completely worthless to us. Obviously, that gives way too much power to readers. But often true, nonetheless.

A friend of mine actually has been hailed as “The Tolstoy of our generation” by a New York Times book critic, and his work has received a National Book Award, just one among many such prestigious acknowledgments from the literary community. Nevertheless, I once observed him agonize for several days because a young woman acquaintance casually said to him, “Your writing is so intense.” Too intense? he wondered. What do you think she meant? he asked me. Several times. Daily. Did the folks who awarded him the MacArthur Genius grant get it all wrong?

What is always surprising and revelatory to me is to discover that some fellow writers consider me to be successful, in that I have published several books and blog for Psychology Today and Huffington Post. Using those criteria, I suppose I am a more successful writer than someone who hasn’t published any books and does not appear on any popular blogs.

On the other hand, that point of view is vastly overshadowed within me by the obvious and glaring fact that I am much less successful than any writer in the entire world, living or dead, who has managed to actually earn a living through their writing, and that includes the folks over at Hallmark who came up with:

Because you’re special,
because you’re you,
I send this greeting,
from you know who.

Not to mention all those authors whose books fill the shelves of Barnes and Noble, or worse, the tables in front of the store — those are clearly the real writers, the successful ones, since you can only find my books on Amazon.

Somehow the other art forms seem more lenient. If you can create stunning, beautiful paintings, people will call you an artist, whether or not you sell your work in galleries. And if you can play a dazzling rendition of a Chopin Polonaise, you are clearly a musician. Yet somehow the act of filling dozens of journals with the most striking and original prose or poetry does not officially qualify you as a writer. Only if you earn enough income from your writing to quit your day job does it seem permissible to tell people, including yourself, that you are a “real” writer.

So despite my publishing successes, I am neither a real nor successful writer, even though one of my earlier books, Wild Heart Dancing, miraculously sold to Simon & Schuster in a bidding war for $26,000; but that was in 1994, and meanwhile my most recent royalty check for my last book, The 99th Monkey, was four dollars and change. Between the two was my novel, Minyan, which brought in exactly a thousand bucks. Psychology Today pays its bloggers based on the number of hits their page gets, but the payments max out at a thousand dollars per fiscal quarter, and so far I’ve only made it to the eight-hundred dollar range. The Huffington Post pays nothing at all, and doesn’t even tell you how many people are reading your piece, so it feels a bit like sending out a message in a bottle. Like this one. (If you’re out there, please let me know.)

Enter the Voice of Encouragement: “If you touch but one other person’s heart, and life, then your work has succeeded, and you have succeeded.” Given that I have received many letters from complete strangers, expressing gratitude for how my writings have touched their lives, why can I not simply be proud of that and count myself a success, book sales and fame aside?

Because I can’t. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s me.

Perhaps you are a writer with better self-esteem, who knows you are good, both “real” and successful, and intuitively recognize that any comments to the contrary can only have been made by a complete imbecile, or at the very least, by someone who speaks a different language, both literally and figuratively. That is, someone from such a different world that your point of view is either completely irrelevant or simply uninteresting to them, but certainly not an assessment of your worth as a human being, or writer.

I’m reminded of the time I played an audiotape in the car for my oldest friend, Perry Goldstein, now a noted composer. (A composer who writes notes.) It was a speech by the late Adi Da, a spiritual teacher, and after listening for a while, Perry simply stated, “He’s answering questions I’m not asking.” I thought that was brilliant, and said it all. We read the writers who address the questions we’re asking, the ones that cause our souls to ache. And as writers, rather than provide pat answers, Rilke suggests that we instead “live inside the questions” and perhaps one day “live our way into the answers.”

Or write our way there. That we’re making the effort at all makes us real writers. And sometimes we succeed. (In the meantime, I still need a day job, except I have no skills.)

Sol Neelman: Lingerie Football And 17 Other Weird Sports

November 13, 2011

Few people are skilled enough to play professional sports – let alone collegiate sports. But everyone can play Weird Sports. It’s not about winning or losing. It’s about dressing up in costume, making each other laugh and drinking a lot of cheep beer.

The first Weird Sport I photographed was roller derby in Seattle. It was 2005, so it was very early on in its renaissance. I thought it was cool that it was making a comeback. And everyone was having such a blast. I felt a connection with those people following their passions on their personal time.

To be honest, when I started, I was simply looking to make fun photos. I love sports and I love squirrelly scenarios. The more weird sports I discovered, the more I became addicted to photographing them. Next thing I knew, I was out of control, flying across the globe trying to top the fun, visual experience from the previous weird sport.

Maybe my favorite weird sport is Kaiju: live monster wrestling based in Boston. Think of Godzilla-like characters in a pro wrestling format. I shot it again recently in Las Vegas with a good friend, Tiffany Brown, who said she heard me laughing all night long.

Sometimes I’m tempted to take part in Weird Sports. But to be honest, I so love being a photographer, documenting the silliness. I feel my role in life is to share the weirdness with the world.

The book of Weird Sports is available for $45 from Sol Neelman’s website.

100,000 ‘Atlas Shrugged’ DVDs Promote The Wrong Thing

November 13, 2011

Ayn Rand’s polemical 1957 novel “Atlas Shrugged” deals in her pet beliefs: the strength of a market economy, the value of reason, and above all, stone-cold rational self-interest. Apparently that’s a hard tagline to swallow, because whoever wrote DVD title sheets for the miserably-reviewed “Atlas Shrugged Part 1,” called the source material, “Ayn Rand’s timeless novel of courage and self-sacrifice.” In an unintentionally hilarious press release on the movie’s official blog, Atlas Productions LLC execs apologize for the error with a series of frameworthy quotes:

From CEO Harmon Kaslow:

“As we all well know, the ideas brought to life in Atlas Shrugged are entirely antithetical to the idea of ‘self-sacrifice’ as a virtue. Atlas is quite literally a story about the dangers of self-sacrifice. The error was an unfortunate one and fans of Ayn Rand and Atlas have every right to be upset.”

And more, from Communications Director Scott DeSapio:

“It’s embarrassing for sure and of course, regardless of how or why it happened, we’re all feeling responsible right now. You can imagine how mortified we all were when we saw the DVD but, it was simply too late – the product was already on shelves all over the Country. It was certainly no surprise when the incredulous emails ensued. The irony is inescapable.”

The company has set up a page for angry objectivists to order a free corrected title sheet, which now reads: “Ayn Rand’s timeless novel of rational self-interest comes to life…” The generous offer strikes us as distinctly un-Randian.

Lev Raphael: The Five Stages of Book Touring

November 13, 2011

I’m currently on my fourth book tour in Germany, where people value books and authors in ways you don’t find in the U.S.

I’m reading from my memoir My Germany in German and English, and the tour is going well, with enthusiastic audiences. But there’s also an inner tour I’m on, one that has five stages I am very familiar with. I think other authors will recognize them.

First comes exhaustion. The time change is brutal, but even worse is the long flight. Even when you fly business class, if you’re lucky, sleeping well en route is unlikely and starting a tour in that state is starting with a huge deficit. Readings demand absolute focus, they’re performances and you have to be totally committed. Pushing past the exhaustion ultimately leaves you even more drained.

As that fades, though, loneliness follows. No matter how beautiful the city you’re in (and I started in lovely Leipzig this week), it’s not home and it’s hard to enjoy museums, architecture, restaurants when you’re thinking ahead to the next Skype call, hoping you’ll have email waiting for you next time you check. And you check constantly. The contact is a lifeline.

But familiar rhythms take over pretty quickly, and you open up to your surroundings. You’re suddenly interested and focused outward. The food, wine, and beer taste better than you realize; buildings you passed with a shrug demand appreciation, photos, maybe even a description in your journal. The life you’re living as a tourist on a kind of mission becomes fun. And it’s not so bad anymore being unable to share it directly, in the moment, with someone you love at your side.

Interest turns to excitement. The cultural differences become more and more fascinating even if you’ve reflected on them before. The sensual pleasures of being in a place with a cafe culture mount and you wonder yet again at how comfortable and clean the train stations are, you revel in the flower shops at even the tiniest ones, and the solidly delicious food at the stations. Maybe you even start thinking in your host language or dreaming in it. Instead of waking up dreading the next city, you’re eager to move on.

And then there’s regret. After half a dozen or more readings, many dinners and lunches with fascinating people you would never meet in any other way and will likely never see again, suddenly the tour is ending. You have to pack smart now, not just throw things in your bags as you’ve done so far. You have to ship back the presents you’ve received, hoping they won’t get held up in Customs too long. You’ve learned once again how to thrive under a special kind of stress, and suddenly this skill has to be shelved. You wonder when your next tour will be…

Disgraced Lobbyist Claims Lawmakers Broke The Rules

November 13, 2011

Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff recently revealed that several lawmakers have bragged to him about insider stock trading.

Abramoff said in an interview with CNBC that as many as a dozen congressmen informed him of insider trading. Both the congressmen and their aides allegedly took part in stock trading based on foreknowledge of market-moving information on Capitol Hill, according to Abramoff.

Abramoff said he heard these confessions at Signatures, the exclusive restaurant he owned on Pennsylvania Avenue before a corruption scandal landed him in prison for three years. He said the lawmakers — who he chose not to name — earned anywhere from $2,000 to as much as “several hundred thousand dollars” based on insider knowledge.

“It was more, ‘Look at me, I’m a real great stock trader,’” Abramoff told CNBC.

Because Abramoff never played the stock market himself, he said he wasn’t fazed by the bragging.

“I was making far more money than they were, so I wasn’t as impressed as perhaps they thought I’d be,” he said.

Abramoff said it’s “widely known” insider trading is a common occurrence in Washington. The former lobbyist has been making the rounds in recent days promoting his new book, Capitol Punishment: The Hard Truth About Washington Corruption From America’s Most Notorious Lobbyist.

Michael Giltz: Veterans Day: Five Books to Read

November 13, 2011

THE THINGS THEY CARRIED BY TIM O’BRIEN ($14.95 PAPERBACK; HOUGHTON MIFFLIN)
MATTERHORN BY KARL MARLANTES ($15.95 PAPERBACK; GROVE PRESS)
WHAT IT IS LIKE TO GO TO WAR BY KARL MARLANTES ($25; ATLANTIC MONTHLY PRESS)
WILLIE & JOE: THE WW II YEARS BY BILL MAULDIN ($39.99 PAPERBACK; FANTAGRAPHICS)
WILLIE & JOE BACK HOME BY BILL MAULDIN ($29.99; FANTAGRAPHICS)

Today is Veterans Day, so I’ve been leading up to it by reading some of the current and classic works about war and soldiers. You can’t go wrong with any of them or a hundred other books one might name. These are just the few that happened to snag my attention in the last few weeks.

You can’t go wrong with The Things They Carried, acclaimed as a modern masterpiece the day it was released in 1990 and, if anything, it’s reputation has only grown. The Tim O’Brien collection of short stories is a favorite “handseller” of independent bookstores. That is, it’s one of those books they will always recommend to lovers of good fiction looking for a discovery. It’s based on O’Brien’s experience in the Vietnam War.

That’s also the source for the work of Karl Marlantes, who quietly set up shop on the bestseller list with the novel Matterhorn last year. Now he’s returned with What It Is Like To Go To War, a nonfiction work about his experience in war and how ill-prepared most 19-year-old kids are to endure it. It’s already appearing on lists of the best books of the year and is a fascinating companion piece to Matterhorn.

But today I want to talk art inspired by another war: the cartoons of Bill Mauldin. At one point, this man who made the cover of Time magazine twice was perhaps the most famous average soldier in the world (as compared to generals like Patton and Eisenhower). Mauldin’s Willie & Joe were grunts, regular foot soldiers who sat in the mud, complained about the food and otherwise captured the cynical, direct, let’s get this job done right so we don’t have to do it again attitude that soldiers embodied during WW II.

First and foremost, Willie & Joe are funny. Fantagraphics has put the WW II years out in paperback, but I’ve got the also available hardcover, a great looking slipcase in army green with two fat volumes of his captivating artwork. Never having served (or even fired a gun), it’s an absorbing glimpse into the day-to-day life of soldiers while it was happening and the end not known. It’s easy to identify with: employees in any capacity gripe about their bosses. But the more specific Mauldin is, the more biting and fascinating his work is. The strip was a remarkable outlet for frustrations and annoyance and genuine anger: it didn’t just poke fun at the higher-ups; it revealed problems and gripes that needed to be addressed. Seeing Willie & Joe endure the same craziness was surely comforting. But this wasn’t just an easy way to redirect attention from the actual problems they faced. And while the war was on, people at home took just as much comfort in their sad sack endurance. It was wildly popular among civilians as well as soldiers; being able to joke about the hardships meant they’d be okay in the end, right?

Finally, it’s Willie & Joe: Back Home that moved me the most. The cover shows a soldier without a place to stay, sleeping on a park bench and covered in a poster saying “Welcome Home” to the soldiers. Too often, soldiers are praised and appreciated in the heat of battle but treated like an annoyance once the fighting has stopped. Bill Mauldin wasn’t even sure anyone would want to hear about Willie & Joe once World War II had been won and, indeed, the strip faded in popularity, especially as Mauldin tackled social issues and kept a spotlight on the poor treatment of soldiers, who deserved better.

Clearly, veterans don’t get two votes at the ballot box despite their service and the risking of life and limb when called to duty. But sometimes even that one vote, that one voice is begrudged, whether it’s the veteran in Oakland sent to the hospital by cops during an apparently peaceful protest in the Occupy movement or a soldier getting booed during a Presidential debate because he identified himself as gay and said he wanted to serve his country without having to lie.

it’s all happened before. Todd DePastino’s excellent essay details Mauldin’s career, his artistic achievements and the battles he fought within himself and with his syndicators over this series. Mauldin is always funny, but those with a rosy image of WW II will be surprised by the complex world shown here: sometimes veterans are chagrined to discover that jobs they were assured would be waiting for them have disappeared while other times they’re disconcerted to see the person who is going to be fired to make way for them. Again and again, veterans are forgotten, forced to travel home by riding the rails or wondering where the crowds are that greeted vets after the victory in Europe but have moved on by the time the Pacific boys head home.

This was bad enough as far as some newspapers were concerned, but Mauldin really lost them when he continually focused on social issues. Mauldin skewered the prejudice that treated a returning vet as a Jap because of how he looked, never mind where he was born or where he fought. He mocked the VFW, at the time held hostage according to Mauldin by the soldiers of a different era who blocked moves to give WW II vets real say in the organization and then publicly supported hateful agendas like segregation that had nothing to do with the group as such. Mauldin could tease young college students fired up by social consciousness but turn around and be blistering over the vicious prejudice and hatred of lynching.

People turned away. Where were the easy laughs of Willie & Joe? Papers dropped him, even as Mauldin found the right voice to balance his heart with his humor. By December 31, 1946 it was all over. Willie & Joe were home but forgotten. Mauldin had just won the Pulitzer Prize one year earlier but no one wanted to hear him now. In the 1950s he would focus on editorial cartooning with great success. And Willie & Joe were still beloved by the greatest generation, given tribute by Charles Schulz in his Peanuts strip on Veterans Day in 1998. Willie & Joe and Mauldin made it onto a stamp in 2010, seven years after he died. And now Fantagraphics has captured Mauldin’s most enduring characters in two releases that do him justice.

If Veterans Day proves the spur to dive into any of these books (or the many others I might have mentioned), then that’s just one more reason to say thanks to the people who have served in the past and do so today.

Randy Fox: PHOTOS: Remnants Of The Wild West

November 13, 2011

We’ve all seen the transformation of the American landscape over these last decades. Of course, not only has the lay of our land changed, so have we. In the old factory cities of the Rust Belt, which were home to so many working-class and proud family units; in the Midwest, where farming was, many times, a way of life handed down; and in Texas, where a maverick rancher could establish his own life and business for his family’s benefit and future.

It was about making the best of an opportunity, and in a prospering land, there were opportunities to be had.

2011-11-09-shannonhereitis570.jpg

In the seemingly faceless expanses of the Texas badlands, remnants of that time still exist, some living and weathered, others are dead and decaying. The elements and relics of that region have proven fruitful to artists who end up finding their muse there. The inspiration may be waiting a hundred miles from the nearest main highway or it may have to be carefully spotted through the weathered residue, but they are there, waiting.

2011-11-09-shannonbillsplace570.jpg

Shannon Richardson, an Amarillo-based photographer, whose book, Route 66: American Icon, pays beautiful tribute to that famous and fading stretch of road, had this to say about the area:

“Texas and the Southwest in general has a certain allure that invites exploration and a sense of adventure. The landscapes are vast and dramatic in scope. Venturing off the main highways you pass through places that have become time capsules of bygone eras. Their past is rarely built over and usually is left to slowly decay.”

2011-11-09-shannonarrowheadmotel570.jpg

Richardson has found himself chasing and capturing the aging relics of a bygone cinematic wild west. One of Richardson’s current projects, Texas Is a Fine Place to Die, is a visually striking work based in the passing of that Texas culture.

“I became interested in exploring and photographing the small towns of the region after watching “Hud,” which is an excellent 1963 black-and-white film that was shot near Amarillo in the town of Claude. It captured the sparse landscape and iconic Texas rural way of life for that time period. I started building a series of images that portrayed the places, people and traditions that was the transition from the Wild West to the new west. A generation when cowboys drove Cadillacs and shoot outs took place on the screen at the matinee.”

It’s fitting that Richardson would mention the film “Hud” as an influence. His rich monochrome photos are not only cinematic in their drama and atmosphere but also in their storytelling. It’s difficult to see one of Shannon’s photos and not find yourself drawn into the frame, wanting to know more about the people or the place.

2011-11-09-shannonontherange570.jpg

My complete interview with Shannon Richardson can be seen at the American Elegy site. For more information about Shannon and his work please visit his website.

Olivia Katrandjian: José and Pilar: A Love Story

November 13, 2011

“What should I say, Pilar?” José Saramago, the Portuguese writer, asked his wife, when asked to give a Christmas greeting during a television interview.

“That Christmas should last all year,” Pilar del Rio replied, always knowing what to say when the Nobel Laureate couldn’t find the right words.

“But I hate Christmas. How can I say that?”

Self-described as “quiet” and “melancholic,” Saramago was born in a village in Portugal to a family that could not afford to send him to school past the fourth grade. It was only at the age of 60 that he began to write full-time. Saramago won fame in the English-speaking world for his novel Baltasar and Blimunda, a love story set during the Portuguese Inquisition, and Blindness, a fantastical novel in which a plague of “white blindness” reduces a country’s people to their most primitive state. In 1998, he became the first writer in Portuguese to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Today, his books have been translated into 25 languages. Not bad for a man who didn’t go to middle school.

While this may sound like the story of a self-made man, the late Saramago did not reach his success alone. As the saying goes, behind every great man there is a great woman, and for Saramago, del Rio was — and continues to be — that woman.

“I am absolutely convinced that there are two José Saramagos: José Saramago before he met Pilar, and José Saramago after he met Pilar. And that’s all I have to say,” said the Spanish writer Juan Teba.

The recent documentary José and Pilar captures the last years of Saramago’s life, after he met del Rio. It portrays the author as a private man forced into the public sphere. Del Rio, a stubborn, fearless and outspoken feminist who owns any room she walks into, guided Saramago through press conferences, book signings, award ceremonies and endless interviews, which the author reluctantly agreed to.

“Soon dead bodies will begin to appear, dead photographers, reporters, cameramen,” the author jokes in the film. “And since nobody suspects me of being a murderer, as long as there are reporters, I’ll go on killing them. Especially photographers.”

The film was popular in Portugal, although Saramago, who was infamous for being a Communist and an atheist, had a complicated relationship with his homeland. A devoutly religious country, Portugal was opposed to Saramago’s work, so much so that when he published The Gospel According to Jesus Christ in 1991 and it was nominated for the European Literary Prize, the Portuguese government banned the book from the competition. The writer moved to Spain in a self-imposed exile.

But José and Pilar, which ran in theaters for five months and was chosen to represent Portugal in the 2012 Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Film category, helped to change the Portuguese people’s perception of Saramago. It is an intimate look into the life of an endearing and compassionate man.

The film was the vision of Miguel Gonçalves Mendes, a Portuguese director who loved Saramago’s novels and begged the author to allow him to make a documentary about his life. Saramago was hesitant, but finally agreed. After four years of filming, Mendes created the two-hour documentary out of 240 hours of footage. The author told Mendes he was pleased with the final product.

“When Saramago saw the final product, he said to me, ‘While you were filming, I had some doubts about the things you chose to shoot, but now I see that the movie is about more than me — it’s about life and relationships,’” said Mendes. “Saramago said to Pilar, who was by his side, ‘This film is a declaration of my love for you.’ She replied, ‘Yes, but my life is a declaration of love for you.’”

Del Rio’s life since Saramago’s death in 2010 has been just that. She dedicates her time to fulfilling her late husband’s wish for the foundation — to “continue” him. Saramago was deeply moved by the injustice of the world, and Pilar shares his political convictions.

“Everyone has a right to food, a house, education, freedom of expression, and everyone has the duty to collaborate to make that happen. Citizens cannot be quiet in front of the things that governments are doing. Citizens must intervene,” she said.

A journalist by profession, del Rio voices her opinions through political commentaries on Spanish radio. She also organizes discussions to increase dialogue and raise social awareness about social justice.

“We work at a level of reflection, not protests, bringing thinkers and philosophers together to debate questions. That’s our goal — to make society think,” she said.

In 2012, the foundation’s headquarters will open in Casa dos Bicos (The House of Spikes), a 16th-century building in Lisbon that will include a library and exhibitions and host cultural events and conferences. The foundation also promotes reading by presenting workshops based on Saramago’s only children’s book, The Biggest Flower in the World, at schools and public libraries.

When asked what she misses most about her husband, del Rio said, “I will not tell you concrete things. But I miss him all. I miss him entirely, completely. We all miss him, because he was not only a novelist, he was a thinker who fought against the myths of power, religion, and empty morals. He stood for something. He thought about the future and looked into the past.”

“The fact that Jose is dead does not mean that Saramago has died,” she added. “Saramago still lives.”
